European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
