Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
