Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
