Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
